There may be a topic that is safe to discuss with your relatives over Thanksgiving dinner after all. According to a new survey from Edelman Intelligence, three out of four individuals in the U.S. who identify themselves as politically conservative and over 80 percent of individuals who identify themselves as liberal support clean energy.

The survey asked people from different age groups, education levels, and political groups how they feel about renewable energy. Out of a little over 2,000 respondents in the U.S., over 70 percent stated that they believe the production of more clean energy will create new jobs and economic growth.

Climate change was also recognized by U.S. respondents as the third most important global challenge, following terrorism and access to health care. In the wake of the U.S. pulling out of the Paris Agreement, the disconnect between public opinion and governmental action has been extreme. The fact that the public is still willing to push forward and continue to fight, however, is extremely vital for the planet.

As we wait for our local and national governments to catch up, there are simple steps that everyone can take to support clean energy and combat climate change:

  • Cut back on your daily energy use at home

  • Contact your representatives

  • Direct your money to renewable energy sources

  • Sign up for clean energy programs

  • Carpool, walk, bike, or take public transit

  • Recycle and reuse

Luckily, the world is changing every day. When faced with the real, live effects of a catastrophic problem, like global warming, people are more willing to start making an effort to improve the world around them. The power is in the hands of the people, and you can take advantage of all resources available to help save the environment now.
