According to a detailed new article in The Economist, China has made massive feats to protect the environment in the last decade. The entire country has banned together to make a positive impact on the world around them. Since 2008, they have made waves in climate change policy. And they are inspiring millions worldwide to do the same.
China’s Climate Success
In 2009, China planned to cut its emissions by 40-45 percent below 2005 levels relative to GDP growth by 2020. They also set a goal to increase non-fossil fuel shares and forest stock volume and coverage. They have continually and meticulously measured these goals and have had extremely successful results. Why? Because they have experienced the impact of climate change first-hand. Extreme temperatures, unprecedented rain, and intolerable air pollution have pushed the country and its people to make a change.
This year, alone, they were able to increase the forest stock volume by 2.68 billion cubic meters. The country achieved 97 percent of its carbon reduction goal, and 60 percent of its renewable energy and forest coverage goals in just 10 years.
When Will the Rest of the World Join?
One of the most successful countries has helped prove that you can massively reduce your impact on the environment without much time. But when will the rest of the world catch up?
If we reduce emissions by increasing our use of clean, renewable energy, we increase the energy market value. The price of energy goes down, and business grows. If we take care of the environment, we, too, will grow. Your everyday choices can help make this environmental revolution a reality.
