The Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California is going 100% renewable and using local energy to do it. They are using Peninsula Clean Energy’s ECO100 option to switch all electric accounts to renewables. This makes them the largest participant in San Mateo County supplier’s program.

The Sustainable Campus

Their goal is to reach 50% renewable energy for their data centers by next year. The Menlo Park location will run on 100% wind power. The design of the headquarters is also built sustainably. It is designed like a “smart city”, with necessities and homes in a walkable distance. They even have green roofs and plenty of green space. In these spaces, 80% of the plants will be native, low water users.

Big Business is Making the Change

Facebook is just one of the many Fortune 500 companies with climate and renewable goals. Almost half of all Fortune 500 companies are taking initiative in the climate and renewability field. All of these projects combined saved almost $4 billion just in 2016. That is the equivalent of taking 45 coal plants offline. As the years go on and technology gets smarter, that number will only increase.
